Things for families to see and do

There are so many fun things to do as a family at Thurlestone. Here are our top 10:

  1. Yarmer Beach (5 minute walk): Swimming, building dams or exploring the rockpools at low tide. Accessible with a pushchair.
  2. Broad Sands (Cowrie Cove) (10 minutes walk): This has a steep descent but is worth the climb down. A lovely quiet beach with rock pool swimming pool at low tide.
  3. Bantham Beach (20-minute walk):  Huge sandy beach - one of the best beaches in the UK.  You can swim, bodyboard/surf, play beach cricket. There is parking, free public toilets, a gastrobus serving pizzas, lifeguards in the summer and a surf school.
  4. Burgh Island (30-minute drive):  Kids will love taking the 'sea tractor' across to the island at high tide when the island's causeway is submerged and exploring the island, which is straight out of Enid Blyton.

  5. Hope Cove (50-minute walk): Our kids love to jump off the pier at high tide, then have an ice cream from the village shop before walking back along the South West Coast path to Thurlestone. We highly recommend the burgers/fajitas at the Cove.

  6. Thurlestone /South Milton Sands (20-minute walk): Swim/paddle through the iconic Thurlestone Rock at low tide. There is a National Trust car park (free to members), free public toilets, and paddle boards available to hire in the summer.

  7. Woodlands Theme park (30-minute drive): It has a zoo-farm, indoor and outdoor slides, rides and zip wires. Recommended for children aged 6-14 years. Good value.

  8. Golden Hind, Brixham (1-hour drive): Step aboard a full-size replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship, the Golden Hinde. Learn more about how he circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580.

  9. Paignton Zoo (40-minute drive): With over 2,000 animals, there is plenty to see. Its set in 80 acres of beautiful gardens.

  10. Little Byfield - chill out at your home-away-from home, kicking a ball around in our private garden, streaming or playing board games after a busy day on the beach.
